Notifications

Bifolk keeps you informed about important events and changes across your organizations through its notification system. Notifications alert you to overdue operations, completed data imports and exports, system updates, and more.

Target Audience: Beekeepers and end users

Notification Bell

When you are logged in, a bell icon appears in the top navigation bar. If you have unread notifications, a badge with the count is displayed on the bell.

Click the bell to open a dropdown that shows your five most recent notifications, with unread notifications listed first. From the dropdown you can:

  • Click a notification to navigate to the related item (such as a hive, an export job, or a changelog page)
  • Click Mark all read to mark all notifications as read at once
  • Click View all notifications at the bottom to open the full Notification Center

Notification Center

To view all your notifications, click View all notifications from the bell dropdown or navigate to the Notification Center directly. The Notification Center shows a paginated list of all your notifications across all your organizations.

Filtering Notifications

Use the tabs at the top to filter notifications:

  • All - Shows all notifications
  • Unread - Shows only unread notifications
  • Todo - Shows notifications related to operation assignments and completed checklists
  • Dashboard - Shows alerts about overdue operations, hives needing inspection, and low stock items
  • Export/Import - Shows notifications about completed or failed data export and import jobs
  • System - Shows system alerts such as new version announcements and configuration warnings

Each tab displays a count badge so you can see how many notifications are in each category at a glance.

Reading a Notification

Each notification displays:

  • Category icon - A visual indicator of the notification type
  • Title - A brief summary of the event
  • New badge - Appears on unread notifications
  • Message - Detailed description of what happened
  • Timestamp - How long ago the notification was created
  • Organization - Which organization the notification belongs to
  • Priority - Color-coded indicator (low, medium, high, or urgent)
  • View button - If the notification has a related item, click View to navigate to it

Marking Notifications as Read

You can mark notifications as read in several ways:

  • Click the checkmark button on an individual unread notification
  • Click Mark all as read above the notification list to mark all notifications as read at once

Deleting Notifications

  • Click the trash icon on an individual notification and confirm the deletion
  • Click Delete all in category to remove all notifications in the currently selected category (or all notifications when viewing the "All" tab)

Warning

Deleting notifications is permanent and cannot be undone.

Notification Types

Bifolk creates notifications automatically when certain events occur. You do not create notifications manually. The following sections describe what triggers each type.

Todo Notifications

Todo notifications inform you about operation assignments and checklist progress:

  • New Operation Assigned - When another user assigns a beekeeping operation (feeding, treatment, or maintenance) to you
  • Todo Item Completed - When someone completes a checklist item on an operation assigned to you
  • Todo Checklist Complete - When all checklist items for an operation are finished

Dashboard Alerts

Dashboard alerts notify you about conditions that need attention:

  • Overdue Operations - You have feeding, treatment, or maintenance operations past their scheduled date
  • Hives Need Inspection - One or more of your active hives have not been inspected in the last 7 days
  • Low Stock Items - Inventory items in your warehouse have fallen below their minimum quantity

Info

Dashboard alerts are checked periodically and use deduplication to avoid sending the same alert more than once within 24 hours.

Export/Import Notifications

These notifications inform you about data exchange operations:

  • Export Complete - Your data export file is ready for download
  • Export Failed - Your data export encountered an error
  • Import Complete - Your data import has been processed successfully
  • Import Failed - Your data import encountered an error

System Notifications

System notifications provide information about the application itself:

  • New Version - Bifolk has been updated to a new version, with a link to the changelog
  • Configuration Warnings - System categories that require configuration options to be set up in your organization (visible to organization owners and administrators only)

Notification Priority

Each notification has a priority level indicated by a color-coded badge:

Priority Color Description
Low Grey Informational updates (e.g., version updates, completed todo items)
Medium Blue Standard notifications (e.g., inspection reminders, import completions)
High Yellow Important alerts (e.g., overdue operations, failed exports)
Urgent Red Critical alerts requiring immediate attention

Organizations and Notifications

Notifications are always associated with a specific organization. If you belong to multiple organizations, the Notification Center shows notifications from all of them. The organization name is displayed on each notification so you can identify which organization it relates to.
